Consumer Insights

The long-term goal of EUFIC is to contribute to a behavioural change of consumers towards healthier and more balanced eating habits by communicating science-based information on food in an understandable and effective way. In order to accomplish this mission, EUFIC collaborates with renowned academic experts and top research universities across Europe within EU-funded and EUFIC-funded projects, which cover a variety of consumer science topics related to food and nutrition labelling.

Nutrition Labelling

Research into the effects of nutrition labelling on consumer understanding, attitude, purchase and consumption is a key area at EUFIC. Since 2003 EUFIC has been researching consumer news around nutrition labelling. Projects consist of numerous pieces of research, undertaken in collaboration with renowned academic partners across Europe, including pan-European in-store studies.

Sustainability plays a major role in producing today’s food. It is one of EUFIC’s key areas of expertise to better understand the role sustainability plays in consumers’ dietary behavior. This includes both environmental and ethical aspects such as Fair Trade but also Animal Welfare.

Health claims and symbols are intended as aids for consumers in making healthy choices. As part of food labelling, it is important to understand how consumer behavior is influenced by health information provided, both in worded (claims) and symbolic (symbols) format.
