In this interview with EUFIC's Director General, Dr. Josephine Wills, Robert Madelin explains the important role that the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health plays in the overall Public Health strategy for Europe.

In the first of two podcasts recorded recently at the Second International Conference on Physical Activity & Public Health (ICPAPH) in Amsterdam, EUFIC spoke with Professors Steven Blair and Stuart Biddle about the impact of sedentary lifestyle behaviours and the conducive environments that support inactivity. Professor Blair details the risk associated with cardiovascular disease whilst Professor Biddle focuses on inactivity amongst Europe’s adolescents.

In June 2009, the Conference of the International Society of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity took place in Cascais, Portugal. The conference gathered experts from around the globe to discuss effective interventions for the control of obesity and other diseases related to poor diet and inactivity. In a podcast interview, EUFIC spoke with Dr. Mikael Fogelholm, Director of the Health Research Unit at the Academy of Finland, about what keeps people from being physically active and how those barriers could be overcome.

In May 2014, the 21st European Congress on Obesity (ECO), hosted by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), took place in Sofia, Bulgaria. Obesity is one of the fastest developing public health problems of our time and the congress provided an essential platform for discussion on the latest scientific developments in the field. The objectives of the ECO were: to provide an annual forum for the exchange of information about state of the art research in the field of obesity, to identify innovative preventive and treatment strategies to reduce the prevalence of obesity and its associated burden of diseases, and to bring together the experts in the field of obesity research and management. ECO gathers a wide range of audience from clinicians, scientists, health professionals, to opinion leaders and advocacy groups. EUFIC interviewed 10 renowned speakers at the conference, who summarised their work on the obesity problem.
In an interview with EUFIC, coordinator of the EU-funded HELENA study, Professor Luis Moreno of the University of Zaragoza (Spain), outlines the key findings from this groundbreaking research programme.

To mark the fourth anniversary of the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity & Health, Robert Madelin, Director General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) of the European Commission speaks to EUFIC about the maturation of this multi-stakeholder platform, the power of co-operative voluntarism, with accelerated outputs to address nutrition and health issues in Europe.

In celebration of the second anniversary of the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity & Health, Robert Madelin, Director General for Public Health and Consumer Protection (DG SANCO) of the European Commission speaks frankly to EUFIC about what has been achieved, what could be improved and the role of the EU Platform in future EU policy making.

December has been a busy month for the European Commission, and Despina Spanou, Principal Adviser at the Directorate General for Health and Consumers, talks to EUFIC, about Europe’s Nutrition Strategy mid-term progress report, the evaluation of the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, the OECD/EC report “Health at a Glance: Europe 2010”, and the Belgian Presidency/EC Conference on Monitoring and Evaluation of EU and Member States’ strategies on nutrition, overweight and obesity-related health issues.
In May 2013, the 20th European Congress on Obesity, hosted by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), took place in Liverpool. With the prevalence of obesity still on the rise, the objectives of this annual forum are to: communicate the state of the art research in the field of obesity, to foster innovative approaches for the prevention and treatment of obesity and its associated burden of diseases, and to bring together experts in the field of obesity research and management. The programme drew over 1,700 participants and covered a range of obesity-related topics. EUFIC interviewed 10 of the speakers at the conference, who summarised their research findings.
