Is it unhealthy to drink orange juice in the morning because of its acid on an empty stomach?

Francisco González, Spain

The stomach itself produces acids. If you do not have any stomach problems, it does not matter to drink orange juice in the morning. Drinking juice in the morning is a good choice because it is also a good source of vitamin C, thiamin, folate and potassium. The carbohydrates give you also some energy to start the day and juice provides you with fluid. One thing not to forget though is that orange juice, as other acidic foods and drinks in our diet can in susceptible individuals and in certain circumstances (e.g. higher frequency of exposure to acidic foods and/or drinks) cause tooth erosion. For that reason, it is advised to avoid frequent nibbling and sipping of acidic foods and drinks throughout the day, restricting their consumption preferably to main meals, and to clean teeth at least twice per day using fluoride toothpaste. It has been suggested that cleaning teeth immediately after consuming an acidic food or drink should be avoided as this can result in physical wear to the teeth resulting from tooth brushing in the presence of acid.
