How can one speed the ripening of an avocado?

LJ Shelton, United States

The avocado fruit does not ripen on the tree, but will fall off or is picked in a hard, "green" state, then it will ripen quickly. Avocado can be purchased ready to eat but if it is bought green and too firm, it can be ripened at home in a warm place such as the airing cupboard or placed in a paper bag with an apple or an overripe banana and leave overnight. These fruits emit ethylene gas which speeds up the ripening process. To test the ripeness of the fruit, cradle it in the palm of your hand. If it yields to gentle pressure, it is ready to eat.
