May I freeze food which is wrapped in a modified atmosphere packaging (MAP)?
Germany
Generally yes, but it depends on the food and package. The modified atmosphere reduces the growth of germs. For example pre-packaged meat is vacuum-wrapped and then put in an atmosphere with 40 percent carbon dioxide. If the package is a whole plastic bag or if the bottom of the meat container is firm and not only polystyrene, it is appropriate for freezing.
But for example pre-washed and cut salad is mostly put in a controlled atmosphere plastic bag, too. It is not a good idea to freeze salad.Read and follow the storage conditions on the food package, there should be an advice for the storage time in the fridge and freezer, e.g. MAP bread.
