During the 11^th European Nutrition Conference, organised by the Federation of European Nutrition Societies (FENS), which took place from the 26-29 October 2011 in Madrid, a couple of symposia addressed the topic of hydration. Appropriate hydration of the body is a requirement for health and is essential for life itself. Water sustains the body’s many vital chemical reactions and maintains correct body functions. However, the important issue of hydration is often neglected, as nutrition advice predominantly focuses on food intake. In this podcast interview, EUFIC spoke with two key speakers who participated in the symposium "Hydration for Health".

Professor Luis Moreno, shares the results from a study investigating the hydration status in Spanish children. Additionally, Dr. Joan Gandy gives insight into the findings from a recent fluid intake survey in the United Kingdom.

The European Commission-funded project FoodRisC aims to understand current barriers to communicating the risks and benefits of food and identify potential remedies for such challenges. The project seeks to produce a practical toolkit that enables effective and balanced food risk communication. Áine Regan is a PhD student in the FoodRisC project. In this interview she gives an update on her work analysing traditional and social media coverage of the 2008 Irish dioxin crisis. She also talks about what's next in the pipeline for her.

In response to the prevalence of diet-related diseases, governments and food companies increasingly promote nutrition information on food labels to help the consumer make healthy, informed food choices. The 3-year EU Seventh Framework-funded project FLABEL (Food Labelling to Advance Better Education for Life), will provide state-of-the-art science on nutrition labels and consumer behaviour as well as best practice guidelines for future research, industry and policy-makers.
