1. Introduction

This report is based on research done on 8-15 year-old children in France, Germany, Italy, and the UK by the Children´s Research Unit, in conjunction with research agencies from each country. Field work took place at the following times: November 1994 in Germany and the UK; December 1994 and January 1995 in France; and May 1995 in Italy.

Face-to-face interviews were carried out with at least 400 children at 25 locations in each country; demographic statistics were used to select regions so that each country´s populations as a whole was represented. For results based on samples of this size, there is 95% confidence that any error due to sampling and other random effectes could be plus or minus 5%.

Research on children is highly method-sensitive: inappropriate methodologies can give inaccurate results. Particular efforts were made to establish a rapport with each child, and to communicate clearly that there are no "rigt" or "wrong" responses to questions. Face-to-face interviews were used with the aim of increasing the child's feeling of accountability.
