Dr Milka Sokolović, Head of Nutrition and Health, European Food and Information Council Introduction
Dr Milka Sokolović, born in Belgrade, Serbia, holds a degree in Biology from the University of Belgrade, and a PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Amsterdam. She has conducted academic research for fifteen years, mainly in systems biology of metabolic adaptations to starvation, obesity, and type 2 diabetes at the University of Amsterdam. Milka has published a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals and has held dozens of scientific presentations. She has worked as a university lecturer for seven years, teaching medical biochemistry, DNA technology, metabolism, systems medicine, and genomics of disease. Milka joined EUFIC in 2013 as Head of Nutrition and Health, to support Nutrition and Health, and EU-funded projects.


Dr Katherine Appleton, Associate Professor in Psychology, Bournemouth University, UK Eating behaviour - intelligence from the latest science
Dr Katherine Appleton has a PhD in Biological Psychology / Nutrition from the University of Leeds. She has worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds (1999), University of Surrey (2000-2002), University of Bristol (2002-2005), and as a lecturer at Queen's University Belfast (2005-2012). Dr Appleton joined Bournemouth University in Sept. 2012. She focuses on human eating behaviour, with particular emphasis on the optimisation of human health and well-being in the normal population. Her research includes aspects of: healthy eating and the use of different strategies to promote fruit and vegetable consumption; appetite and weight control, primarily with the aim of understanding and improving weight gain and management; nutrition and under-nutrition, and their effects on health, well-being and cognitive performance; taste and consumption; eating style, including dieting, restrained eating and emotional eating and the effects of these behaviours on health and well-being; and includes aspects of physical activity, physical fitness and energy expenditure, and the importance of energy balance.


Dr Rebecca Beeken, Senior Research Psychologist, University College London, UK Successful innovative methods of behavioural interventions
Dr Rebecca Beeken is a Senior Research Psychologist in the Health Behaviour Research Centre, at University College London. She is primarily interested in the development and evaluation of lifestyle interventions, with a focus on behaviour change interventions for obesity. She currently works on a number of randomised controlled trials, including a series of studies on the benefits of lifestyle change for cancer survivors and people with learning disabilities, and she recently completed a trial of a brief habit-based weight management intervention within primary care. Other research interests include the psychological and biological consequences of weight loss, particularly the impact of weight change on cancer risk. Rebecca is also a committee member of the charity Weight Concern, which aims to guide the development of more effective programs of prevention and treatment for overweight and obesity.


Prof. Monique Raats, Director of the Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre, University Surrey, UK Policies rising from consumer food choices - do we need translators?
Professor Monique Raats is Director of the University of Surrey's Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre. Her portfolio of research is wide ranging in terms of topics being addressed (e.g. food choice, policy development, food labelling), and methodologies used (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, stakeholder consultation). She has published over 95 peer-reviewed papers, 19 book chapters, and co-edited two books (The Psychology of Food Choice; Food for the Ageing Population). She is a founding member of the International Society of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity. In 2011 Monique joined the UK's Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition and is a member of its Subgroup on Maternal and Child Nutrition. Currently she is a partner in the FLICC project that is conducting a pilot randomised control trial on front of pack labelling, the CLYMBOL project that studies health claims and consumer behaviour. She also coordinates the REDICLAIM project, which investigates how EU legislation impacts on the substantiation and use of “reduction of disease risk” claims on food and drinks.
