New EU policy brief sets out six priorities for a healthier and more sustainable food system
Last Updated : 22 September 2026More than 90 organisations from across Europe’s food system have come together to identify areas where EU policy could support healthier, more sustainable and fairer food systems.
EUFIC contributed to the development of the new EU Policy Action Brief: Building a healthy, sustainable, and just EU food system, which draws on the scientific framework of the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission.
The initiative brought together a coalition of organisations representing different parts of the food system, including farmers, food manufacturers, retailers, food-service actors, public-health organisations, cities and consumer groups.
The resulting brief focuses on three pillars— sustainable production, healthy consumption and reducing food loss and waste — and identifies six areas for EU action:
- Value-chain development
- Fiscal and economic support
- Public procurement
- Information, transparency and trust
- Research, innovation and knowledge sharing
- Trade and market rules
Having identified where multistakeholder consensus exists, the coalition calls on political leaders to advance action on these policy priorities.
